Gucci has cancelled its upcoming show in Seoul out of respect following the death of more than 150 people in a crowd surge during the city’s Halloween celebrations on Saturday night.
Gucci had planned to bring its Cosmogonie show — first presented in Italy in May but updated with some new looks — to the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul on 1 November. It would have marked creative director Alessandro Michele’s debut in South Korea. However, on Sunday, South Korea’s president Yoon Suk-yeol called for a week-long period of national mourning after the disaster in the capital’s nightlife district of Itaewon. Local authorities are investigating what caused the crowd to surge.
“Our hearts are filled with grief for those who lost their lives or were injured in the tragic event in Itaewon, Seoul,” the Kering-owned company said in a statement. “In respect for the period of national mourning and in alignment with the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration, Gucci will not be proceeding with the planned event.”
South Korea is a burgeoning market for fashion brands wanting to tap into a hyper-engaged customer market. In September, Ami Paris opened a flagship store in Seoul’s Garosu-gil area, and later showcased its Spring/Summer 2023 collection in October during Seoul Fashion Week. Earlier this year, Dior held its first-ever show in Seoul and inaugurated a new concept store in the district of Seongsu-dong. Gucci has approximately six stores across South Korea, and opened Gucci Gaok, its second flagship store in Seoul last year.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy in Itaewon, a neighbourhood that is home to our Gaok store in Seoul,” Gucci’s CEO and president Marco Bizzarri said. “In these difficult hours, we remain unwavering in our commitment to our team and to the people of Korea who mourn the devastating loss of life.”
