Lawmakers in the House are set to impeach President Trump on Wednesday, after formally calling on Vice President Mike Pence to use the 25th Amendment.

Can’t force someone to speak if they’re not on the floor!

This goes again to the complexity that some of the rioters clearly were planning misdeeds before Trump spoke, along with those who got fired up in the moment. (Clearly, those who showed up with zip ties and pipebombs didn’t just decide to riot when Trump spoke!) That is why Democrats have stressed Trump’s campaign of inciting and radicalizing his supporters with two months of false claims that the election was stolen and summoning them to come to DC en masse for Jan 6 – not just his speech to the soon-to-be-mob on that day.

Rep. Veronica Escobar, Democrat of Texas, calls Trump “our greatest national security threat.” The Department of Homeland Security in October warned that violent white supremacy was the “most persistent and lethal threat in the homeland.”

The scene on the House floor looks pretty normal, all things considered, but from the outside…

That is an incredible image. As a denizen of Capitol Hill, it makes me sad to lose big parts of the neighborhood and I wonder whether fences ever come down once they are put up.

That is quite a photo of the outdoor security. Capitol officials have for years resisted erecting a permanent fence around the grounds but that may be imposssible now. My experience in Washington is that once new security features go up, they are hard to remove.

Once again, here’s a closer look at what Trump said before the riot.

Maggie, I wonder if Trump’s statement was planned earlier in the day, or whether they had more indications of further R defection?

Well Annie we are both proud residents of Capitol Hill. It really impacts us.

Yes, Carl, it’s strange to have a purely personal reaction to international events: hey, there goes my favorite running route.

Many of these lawmakers are new to Congress. So strange to think an impeachment debate is the occasion of many of these lawmakers’ first speech on the House floor.

Agree Catie. Not the typical introduction to the House floor. Usually some local project or tribute, not an impeachment speech.

FYI, more here on the issues of barricades being raised that Carl and I were discussing earlier:

FYI – the Trump apparatus is really trying to get that statement condemning violence into the public discussion. In addition to Jim Jordan reading it on the House floor and the White House statement, I just received it as a text from the Trump campaign, which hasn’t texted to its list in a long time.

Rep. Glenn Grothman, Republican of Wisconsin, somewhat defending the Trump forces, saying they are scared of a nation without Donald Trump. Not persuasive.

A lot of R’s seem to dusting off the “Democrats have wanted to impeach President Trump from DAY One” claim from last year. Not sure it carries as much weight (if it ever did), given that it’s already happened.

Mark, it’s also notable that Pelosi was widely criticized on the left for resisting calls to impeach him for so long.

Agree Mark. Democrats definitely want to impeach Donald Trump. Been proven.
