BBC Sport pundits discuss England's chances ahead of last 16 tie against Slovakia

The winners of England's last-16 tie against Slovakia on Sunday will play Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

The Swiss are ranked 19th in the world but beat Italy on Saturday to set up a last-eight tie on Saturday, 6 July in Dusseldorf.

England, ranked fifth, topped Group C and will play Slovakia, ranked 45, who finished third in Group E, in the last 16 on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen (17:00 BST).

The match will be broadcast on ITV and BBC Radio 5 live.

Gareth Southgate's side have a path through the knockouts which avoids many of the major teams.

They had looked on course to play the Netherlands in the last 16, but Georgia's shock 2-0 win over Portugal meant Slovakia are England's next opponents.

Spain, Germany, Portugal, France and Belgium are all on the other side of the draw and England cannot play any of them before the final.

The Three Lions failed to beat Slovenia on Tuesday, but won the group despite their 0-0 draw as Serbia and Denmark also played out a goalless stalemate.

They have topped the group, and now need to win three knockout games - the last 16, quarter-final and semi-final - to reach the final in Berlin on 14 July.

BBC Sport takes a look at the path that England could take for the rest of the tournament.

England unbeaten against Slovakia

By winning the group, England have avoided a last-16 game against Germany, who would have been the opposition for Southgate's side if they had come second in Group C.

Slovakia, whose first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka plays in the Premier League for Newcastle, have never beaten England in six attempts, with five losses and one draw.

The two nations met in the group stage at Euro 2016 with the game ending 0-0. England then beat Slovakia twice in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, 1-0 away from home and 2-1 at Wembley.
