BBC Scotland headquarters in Glasgow has been evacuated after a fire broke out.

It is understood it happened in a plant room on the fifth floor of the Pacific Quay building at roof level.

All staff left the building beside the River Clyde when a fire alarm sounded at about 06:30.

BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast was taken off air, switching to pre-recorded music and breakfast television news bulletins from Scotland were suspended.

Firefighters arrived within minutes of the alarms sounding with at least seven fire engines sent to the scene.

It is understood the fire was discovered by a member of security staff who raised the alarm.

An orange glow of flames could be seen through windows next to the illuminated BBC Scotland sign on the south side of the building.

A BBC Scotland spokesperson said: "We're grateful to the emergency services for their rapid deployment on site.

"We're working hard to ensure the safety of all of our colleagues and will restore our regular services on-air as soon as we can."
