Coleraine and Glentoran play out drab draw

Glentoran and Coleraine remain in fifth and sixth place in the Irish Premiership table

Coleraine and Glentoran lacked a clinical edge in a low-quality goalless draw in the Irish Premiership at the Showgrounds.

Coleraine forward Matthew Shevlin sliced a good chance wide late in the second half.

Glentoran remain in fifth and Coleraine sixth after the draw.

The visitors bossed the opening 45 minutes but squandered chance after chance as Coleraine rode their luck at times.

Jay Donnelly fired a shot past the post after just three minutes and then forced Coleraine goalkeeper Gareth Deane into a smart stop after 20 minutes.

Three minutes later Junior headed the wrong side of the post when unmarked six yards in front of goal.

Russell did something similar before the break as he missed the target completely after Cameron Palmer had found him in the penalty area.

The final action of the half saw Junior force a save out of Deane at his near post after creating space for the shot.

It was a low key opening to the second half before Daire O'Connor forced Deane into a full length diving save in the 73rd minute following a Glentoran counter attack.

Two minutes later Coleraine had their first effort on target when Matthew Shevlin turned inside his marker but failed to beat Aaron McCarey at his near post.

And Shevlin went close again moments later when set up by substitute Jack O'Mahony but he lashed his shot wide of the near post when well placed.

Both sides had half chances in the closing stages but it ended scoreless and a point apiece on a largely frustrating night.
