Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs survived a second-half Miami Dolphins fightback to win 21-14 in the NFL's first visit of the season to Germany.

Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdowns as the Chiefs stormed into a 21-0 first-half lead, but they had to hang on for the win after Miami scored twice in the third quarter.

Two of the best teams in the league, both with records of six wins and two defeats, were playing in the first of two games being held in Frankfurt.

Reacting to the overwhelming success of the NFL playing a regular season game in Munich last year, the league granted two games for this season, with the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots playing at Deutsche Bank Park next Sunday.

And for starters Germany had one of the biggest games of the season with two of the leading MVP contenders going head-to-head with Mahomes facing Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the league's best attack.

Mahomes hit Rashee Rice and Jerick McKinnon for touchdowns in the first half before Bryan Cook returned a fumble from former Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill for a third score in one of the best defensive plays of the season.

Mike Edwards scooped up the loose ball from Hill's fumble but then thought fast and when tackled he offloaded the ball back to Cook to scamper down the right sideline and put the Chiefs in total control.

After being shutout in the first half for the first time in just over two years, Miami hit back with Tagovailoa's touchdown pass to Cedric Wilson and Raheem Mostert running in from 13 yards to cut the gap to seven.

Miami missed the chance to tie or even win the game though when Tagovailoa fumbled a fourth-down snap at the Kansas City 31-yard line with just over a minute left on the clock - enabling the defending champions to leave Germany with the win.

Both teams have a bye week next week before the Chiefs return with a huge Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.
