Great Britain's Ben Proud and Medi Harris both claimed gold medals at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Romania.

Proud won the men's 50m freestyle in 20.18 seconds as he set a European record and was only 0.02s from the world record.

Harris finished first in the women's 200m backstroke, with compatriot Katie Shanahan in second place.

"Coming here I said I wanted that title," said Proud.

"It's the only one outside of the Olympics I didn't have and now, regardless of what happens at the Olympics next year, I feel I can retire happy."

The win for Harris was her first senior individual international title.

"I was really nervous as I haven't done this event in a long time but I'm really grateful I was able to be in the call room with Katie which really helped," she said.

There was also a bronze medal for the Great Britain's Kathleen Dawson, Imogen Clark, Keanna Macinnes and Anna Hopkin in the women's 4x50m medley relay race.

The Championships run until 10 December.
