Betfred Super League
Wakefield (2) 12
Tries: Johnstone, Pratt Goals: Jowitt 2
Hull KR (6) 14
Tries: Davies, Lewis Goals: Martin 3
Hull KR battled to victory over promoted Wakefield Trinity but lost Man of Steel Mikey Lewis to an ankle injury.
The visitors took the lead in fortuitous circumstances when Lewis' lofted kick hit the crossbar before dropping for Tom Davies to scoop up and score the 100th try of his career.
Max Jowitt kicked a penalty to get the home side on the board before the break and Tom Johnstone dived over in the corner to level the score.
Half-back Lewis powered over to quickly give Hull KR the lead but was injured in the act of scoring as he got caught up under a tackler.
The impressive Oliver Pratt wen over in the corner with time running out but Jowitt could not land the kick to send the match to golden point extra time.
With his ankle totally wrapped up, the playmaker managed to play on for a period, but eventually hobbled off the field with just over 10 minutes to play.
Wakefield, who won impressively at Leeds in week one, competed well throughout in front of a sell-out crowd and will take positives from this defeat by last season's beaten Grand Finalists.
The Robins claimed a golden point win over Castleford last week and once again were not at their fluent best with ball in hand.
Lewis was seen after the game on crutches and he and his team will now face an anxious wait to find out the severity of his injury.
They will welcome Salford, who had their salary cap restrictions lifted earlier this week, next Thursday, while Wakefield host St Helens next Saturday.
Wakefield head coach Daryl Powell told BBC Radio Leeds:
"It was a tight game and I thought we were excellent. We were a couple of troops down and we had a bit of sickness today. I thought it was a big, big effort from us.
"We've lost a tight game and I think we can be proud. We've got a genuine team.
"There was nothing in it and they will know they have been in a game.
"The last two weeks we have shown everybody we are not tip-toeing our way into this comp. There is a lot more to come from this team and I think we will get better.
"I'm pretty happy tonight. I'm disappointed but I'm proud. We're in a great place."
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters told BBC Radio Humberside:
"We knew last week was going to be tough and this one was too. That's the beauty of this competition, if you are not on it you will get beaten.
"I thought we had a really good start and that set the platform and we were in control for long periods of the second half too.
"I thought Tom Davies was outstanding with some brave carries and some tough carries."
On Lewis' injury: "Mikey has had an issue there before and he might have aggravated it. We've got to wait and see after a scan."
