Rory McIlroy held his nerve at the third playoff hole to win the Irish Open at the K Club in County Kildare at the expense Joakim Lagergren.

Both birdied the first and second playoff holes at the par-five 18th and although McIlroy's tee shot at the third found the rough, Lagergren's second from the fairway found water to suffer a one-shot penalty.

The Holywood man two-putted a third birdie with Lagergren unable to chip in as the Holywood man won his first tournament since completing a career Grang Slam at the Masters in April - also in a playoff - and first Irish Open title since his K Club win in 2016.

Earlier, McIlroy had sunk a 25-foot putt on the 18th to claim the eagle he needed to join Lagergren on 66 for the day and 17-under par for the tournament, forcing the playoff.
