Jockey Denis O'Regan has announced his retirement and sent support to his injured friend Graham Lee.

Irishman O'Regan, 41, called time on his career after riding Solly Attwell at Navan on Saturday.

Earlier this month he became the first jump jockey to ride a winner at every British and Irish National Hunt racecourse.

He is a former neighbour of Grand National-winning rider Lee, who is in intensive care after a fall.

"What happened to Graham hasn't played a part in my retirement, but it has been a shock and we can only hope for better news," O'Regan told BBC Sport.

"We spent a lot of time together when I rode in England and he helped me buy my first house over there.

"He was a wonderful opponent, wonderful competitor and an absolute gentleman. I wish him and his family all the best."

Compatriot Lee, who is based in North Yorkshire, is recovering from surgery on a serious neck injury and his long-term prognosis is uncertain.

O'Regan completed the full set of wins at racecourses at Hereford on 6 November, having only just returned after 14 weeks out with a back injury.

"I was very lucky to get back for Hereford and I wanted to retire in Ireland with my family around," he said.

The Cork-born jockey rode his first winner in April 2001 and had seven victories at the top Grade One level, including victories at the Cheltenham Festival on Inglis Drever and Tidal Bay.

"I've had 20 years riding as a professional and feel like I've given my all. The time is right to stop now."
