Time for Eze? Nunez as captain? Fantasy football tips

Hopefully you haven't deleted your team and given up on the game after a gameweek 11 shocker.

Rest assured it will have been the same for most managers unless you owned the likes of Jeremy Doku, Nicolas Jackson or Tyrick Mitchell.

You also shouldn't panic-sell players who didn't deliver for you last week, particularly if they've got a promising fixture in gameweek 12.

There are some decisions to be made, though, if you own Dan Burn, John Stones or Tottenham centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero because they are going to be unavailable for a little while.

Fantasy 606 podcast: Defenders, Doku and Digne

I would look at Arsenal, Newcastle and Crystal Palace for your replacements for the longer term and maybe even consider an Arsenal double-up to try to get the edge on your rivals. Ben White and William Saliba are the safest picks in terms of minutes, but they will cost you that little bit more than Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel.

Kieran Trippier is the gold standard for a defender who will add attacking returns and bonus points to regular clean sheets, but that attacking threat may be slightly reduced if he has to fill in at left-back in the absence of Burn. He also costs £7m and so you may have to sacrifice one of your premium midfielders or forwards to fit him into your squad.

Jamaal Lascelles is an excellent budget option at £4m until Sven Botman returns from injury, but Tino Livramento could be a more exciting selection at £4.3m and I would currently go for him over team-mate Lewis Hall.

It's Mitchell or Marc Guehi in the Crystal Palace defence, both at £4.6m now, which is better value than buying Joachim Andersen at £5.1m. Their fixtures get tougher from gameweek 16 onwards, but at that price you can happily sit them on your bench.

Captaincy

This is a trickier call this week with Manchester City facing a trip to Chelsea. I imagine lots of you will be wrestling with whether to go with Erling Haaland for that game or give it to Mohamed Salah for Liverpool's home game against Brentford, but there are plenty of other viable candidates.

Bukayo Saka at home to Burnley, Ollie Watkins at home to Fulham and Kaoru Mitoma at home to Sheffield United all spring to mind - but I also like the idea of going with Darwin Nunez instead of Salah as a more differential choice.

Fixtures to target

I feel like I want a Brighton attacker in my squad for the game against Sheffield United, who've had the leakiest defence in the division so far this season.

The safe pick is Mitoma, but a haul could equally come from any of Evan Ferguson, Joao Pedro, Simon Adingra, Ansu Fati or Pascal Gross.

Gross seems like a left-field selection but he's likely to take penalties if Joao Pedro isn't on the pitch, he's started nine of Brighton's 11 Premier League games and is only owned by 1.6% of managers.

One thing to consider before you make the transfer, though, is how long you'll want any Brighton player in your squad. Their next two games are away to Nottingham Forest and Chelsea and it may be that there are better long-term options for you, particularly in midfield with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon or Eberechi Eze.

Differentials

Eze has returned to fitness at just the right time for FPL managers with Crystal Palace up against Everton, Luton, West Ham and Bournemouth in their next four games.

He came off the bench to provide the assist for Palace's second goal at Burnley in gameweek 11, is only owned by 3.2% of managers and costs £6.1m.

I'm also very tempted by West Ham's Mohammed Kudus at £6.5m, who's currently under 1% ownership and has started in the last four games, scoring in the last two against Arsenal and Brentford.

I'm holding on to Doku, who was such a star for me in gameweek 11, and I'm encouraged by the fact he didn't start against Young Boys in the Champions League. But he would be a risky addition to your squad because of the age-old game of Pep roulette.

Leandro Trossard could be a useful one-week punt for Arsenal's game at home to Burnley but Gabriel Martinelli would be the better long-term bet and only just creeps over the differential definition at 5.1% ownership.

Gamble of the week

It feels like a good week to take a gamble on the captaincy and I fancy a little flutter on Darwin Nunez or Bukayo Saka if he's fit to face Burnley.
