Game of the tournament

We have shortlisted five games from the 45-match group stage. They are:

1. Netherlands v South Africa

The main shock of the tournament saw the Netherlands, ranked 14th in the world, beat third-placed South Africa. The Dutch were 112-6 but rallied to post 245-8 in Dharamsala. South Africa reached 36-0 in reply but then lost regular wickets to lose by 38 runs.

2. Afghanistan v England

Another shock, perhaps on a smaller scale, but a surprise nonetheless. This was only Afghanistan's second World Cup win, and their first over a fellow Test-playing nation. An aggressive start helped them post 284, before they put England in a spin to win by 69 runs.

3. Australia v Afghanistan

Glenn Maxwell hit an unbeaten 201 as Australia sealed their semi-final place with a three-wicket win over Afghanistan. Australia were 91-7, in pursuit of 292, but Maxwell, who struggled with cramp and a back injury, shared an unbroken 202 with captain Pat Cummins.

4. South Africa v Pakistan

We weren't blessed with many nail-biting contests in this World Cup but this was certainly one. It was a crucial game in the chase for a semi-final spot, which made it all the better. Pakistan were bowled out for 270 and South Africa were in control at 206-4 before they slumped to 250-8. That became 260-9 but Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi just got them over the line.

5. Australia v New Zealand

This was another thriller, achieved with two different styles. Australia perhaps left some runs out there despite posting 388, especially after a rapid opening stand of 175 inside 19 overs. New Zealand's approach was more patient and they were left needing 19 from the final over but fell five runs short.
